“Juno”, unsurprisingly, follows Juno - a pregnant teenager who, at the start of the film, is trying to figure out what to do with her unborn child. During the film we are given an insight into her relationships and life. The storyline is clever and original, and managed to keep me interested throughout.
Juno wasnt as I expected - I went in assuming it would be a similar film to Superbad, except better (with its 4 oscar nominations), but it isnt. Juno is a more sentimental film, but don’t write it off because of that - the comedy is still there. Its very well written, witty, sarcastic, and delivered perfectly. Everything about the film feels very natural.
Which leads me to another point - the acting is superb throughout, notably from Ellen Page and Michael Cera. I think one of the oscar nominations the film recieved was for Ellen Page as best actress, and it it more than deserved. The characters themselves are all likable, and unlike some films (I’m looking at you, Jumper Evil or Very Mad ) are well explored and deep.
If I’d known that Juno was a sentimental film I’d have had a few reservations about seeing it. But I’m glad I did, and I’ll probably be seeing it again when its out on DVD.
8.5/10 - Juno doesn’t have any faults, and I’m sure if I liked sentimental films then I’d have given it higher. Its subtle and powerful in equal measure, and I definitely recommend it.
