Wheelz of the MDSA gives us a bit of background about the MDSA, and their search for a new willie ?
It is an independent, voluntary organisation which was formed in 1990, by and for, the mutual benefit of all disabled football supporters of Middlesbrough Football Club. Initially, the association was set up through necessity to ‘fight the corner’ of the disabled spectator in the pre-Disability Legislation era of inadequate and insufficient facilities, and although this remains a fundamental concern, a broader remit is to enhance the matchday experience for disabled fans generally, and to help as many disabled fans as wanting, to attend football matches.
MDSA is a non-profit making, self-funding body, being apolitical in constitution. Membership is automatic and free of charge for ALL disabled Season Card patrons, with a nominal fee for affiliated matchday fans. Funds are raised through social activities, sponsored events, donations from the local Teesside business community and the generosity of fellow Boro fans enabling the financing of operating costs, (e.g.: MDSA minibus insurance premium which was £2.2k pa. in 2007/2008).
By the end of the first season of its’ inception, MDSA had attained credibility of purpose and recognition by MFC as a provider of a valued service; this was formally acknowledged by a Letter of Accreditation from Middlesbrough FC Chairman, Steve Gibson. Currently affiliated within the Charity Registration, and being a proactive founder member of, the National Association of Disabled Supporters (NADS), it is hoped MDSA will successfully attain its own registered charity status in the near future.
The drive is on for a New Willie, theres a range of events and activities going on that we need you, the Boro fans out there to support.
