Movie Review: You Don’t Mess With the Zohan
by terminaljunkie on September 14th, 2008

Another in the long list of Adam Sandler farces; this time out a rude trip into the land of hair stylists and parody, with particular references to the Travolta moves, crude Jewish / Palestinian references, and his penis of plenty!

The comedy follows the exploits of a Mossad James Bond style super-agent who is tired of killing, and wants to get out of the business and become a hairdresser in the USA. To accomplish this he devises a plan that includes his fake death at the hands of another arch-enemy agent, and stows away aboard a jet that is bound for New York. His hair styling as the newly named Scrappy Coco is one thing, but the special services are quite another…..one customer says “Well, the sex is good, and the haircut isn’t bad either.” But all good things come to an end, and so it is with Zohan, as he is recognised by a former acquaintance and now taxi driver in NYC, and his ‘killer’ informed to get the job done properly this time.

The film follows the usual Sandler pattern of comedy and romance. Never a man to temper his wilder meanderings into tastelessness; he pushes the comedy sex a little too far, and crams the gags in so tight that half of them fall over one another. On the romantic side Sandler’s character is wooing the owner of the hair salon, Darlia (Emmanuelle Chriqui) and this too is a hit and miss affair, though it too provides some funny moments.

4.5/10 Self-indulgent, macho, innuendo laden, puerile in places, yet I still got some good laughs out of it. Maybe my juvenile sense of humour has a soft spot for these politically incorrect efforts from Sandler. Anyway, it is not a family film, and perhaps should have a higher certificate for all the sexual references. Other than that it is a so-so effort from Sandler, he seems content to turn out average movies, and yet more ammunition for the Sandler haters, who of course will hate it.
