YouTube links

PostTue Jan 07, 2014 6:29 pm

...how would you rather you posted them?

The current way:
Currently you need to use the URL like this (below) which you get from the URL in your browser:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1I7OGlL6gU8

The share way:
But the "share" button in the YouTube app, and on the website gives you the URL looking like this:
http://youtu.be/1I7OGlL6gU8

It's a pain to make it work for both, but I can you one or the other...

Where are you getting that from? The browser URL?
I got the share idea from trying to share a YouTube video from the iPad app.

But did you take that from the URL in the browser? What do you get if you click the Share button under the YouTube video?

URL in browser, which doesn't work if you use URL from above...

http://youtu.be/i3jA40arq9Y if you use share. So that might be best one to use rather than full URL ?

I'll switch it over to the share URL at some point this week I think. Probably when I take the Christmas decorations down...

Took me a few goes to get used to the current way - if I am watching a video on IGN for example I find myself going on to youtube and searching for it, then copying and pasting the link into here, which is a bit of a pain - would be a lot easier to just get the embed/share link from IGN video

Actually I may have confused the issue - if you are ONLY talking about youtube videos then this is irrelevant.

If I wanted to share a video from IGN, you click share and it gives you two options:

"Link" gives this "http://www.ign.com/videos/2014/01/07/how-do-ps3-games-look-on-playstation-now"

"Embed" gives this "<iframe src="http://widgets.ign.com/video/embed/content.html?url=http://www.ign.com/videos/2014/01/07/how-do-ps3-games-look-on-playstation-now" width="468" height="263" scrolling="no" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe>"

Personally, if I could post ign and other videos to here (so they play on here like the youtube ones do) it would improve the site no end

I'll have a look and see if I can do one for IGN. I don't know of a way to do it for *all* videos, but might be able to do it for say YouTube, IGN, Vimeo etc, and you'd just have to embed it in the right tags for it to work. Will check it out tonight.

Right, all YouTube links must now be in the format:

http://youtu.be/Gdv55pki5As

You can just click the SHARE button on any YouTube video (embedded or on the website) and you get that link. The share button looks like a dot with two lines coming out of it into other dots...
