So 15 different German teams. Of which:

5 are currently in the Bundesliga (Bayern Munich, Borussia Dortmund, Schalke 04, Stuttgart, Fortuna Dusseldorf)

4 are in Bundesliga 2 (Hertha Berlin, Union Berlin, Cologne and 1860 Munich)

2 in Liga (3rd tier of German football) - Saarbrucken and Hansa Rostock

2 in local district leagues (Bonn and VFR Neuss)

2 have been liquidated - Bremerhaven (2012) and Sachsen Leipzig (2011)

Just back from watching BMG in the pub. 1-0 at half-time thanks to a penalty. Then fell apart to two Lazio goals on the break with terrible defending before another penalty (and a sending off) which they missed. The third  penalty was converted closely followed by a fantastic free kick to put them 3-2 in front with not much time left. Inevitably a Lazio equaliser arrived with the last kick (it was a header actually) of the match. BMG fans in the pub were loud when they scored but shrugged their shoulders in a 'typische BMG' way whenever Lazio scored. They drew 3-3 at home at the weekend. Looks like I've got the right lot. Roll on April. 0-0 nailed on against the bottom of the league.

Well it wasn't the greatest game. A penalty and sending off after about 20 minutes just about finished it, but die Fohlenelf seemed about as good at scoring as our lot and 1-0 it stayed and 10-man relegation-threatened Augsburg were always in with a chance. The ground is miles out but the transport is excellent with plenty of 'buses from about ten different places. And thousands, literally thousands, cycle to the game. A proper programme as well for one euro though you have to know they do one and actively seek it out. I saw the top of the table Dritte Liga game on Saturday between Preußen Münster and Karlsruher. Again there were hundreds who cycled to the game. 2-1 to the home side with a near-capacity 14,500 there. I can't see them allowing more than 10,000 in if it was an English ground. And no drinking of course.

You're probably right. Also, the phrase "to a reasonable level" might only be used in certain obscure dialects of the Eifel mountains.

That was fun. I went to Arminia Bielefeld v Köln on Friday, Bayer Leverkusen v Augsburg on Saturday, Borussia Mönchengladbach v Eintracht Frankfurt on Sunday, and Vfl Bochum v Kaiserslautern on Monday.

A few observations about German football:

1) The second half starts precisely 15 minutes after the first finishes. No nonsense with near 20-minute breaks to allow players to get off, clear the pitch of whatever was going on at half time and waiting for teams to come back on.

2) Hardly any play acting after a foul. If the player does roll around the referee has a word presumably to tell him not to be so silly and by and large he gets up and gets on with it. I think the trainer was on once in Monday's game.

3) Presumably related to the first two, games rarely go on beyond the equivalent of ten to five. Not a big deal possibly, but I had a couple of tight connections for evening games which would have been a problem here, but I made them with ease. All helped by the transport away from the grounds which, of course, is fantastic.

4) Support is almost entirely positive. I only recall one occasion where someone got up and had a go at his own team. Frankfurt fans were superb when their team was getting hammered.

And on the subject of transport, the storms caused all kinds of problems on Monday but the information was awful! One train was still shown as 15 minutes late 25 after it was due and trains were disappearing from boards and then reappearing while no explanations were given.

The programme for the Bielefeld game had a piece about a game between the two clubs 15 years ago and a familiar face beamed out of the page. I've found some highlights of the game:

Thanks Rafael. Nice thought but, to be honest, I don't like HSV very much. In fact I was rather hoping you would lose that relegation play-off the other week so that that smug clock in the stadium would have to be removed. No offence mate, and thanks for the thought.

I tried to get tickets for the Derby game against FC Köln on the 20th Feb, as a few of us are staying in Düsseldorf that weekend celebrating a mates 40th. But got informed from the club that it is an absolute SELL OUT
I think we now going to go to watch Fortuna Köln on the Saturday afternoon, similar to situation in Premier league the games we wanted to see have been moved for tv coverage, Shalke late to late sunday afternoon and Fortuna Düsseldorf to Monday evening ;- we fly back earlier Sunday night

Looks like you got very unlucky there with the choice of weekend. There's usually something you can get to round there. I doubt if the Gladbach tickets even went on general sale, mind. And a pity about Düsseldorf; it's a big, very modern ground. Fortuna Köln is pleasant enough, though, but the ground is like a non-league ground. With a running track. And hope it doesn't rain.

Capybara, we were limited to that weekend unfortunately as the lad who's 40th it is, is a schoolteacher, hence having to go half term week.
Our initial game plan was shalke v Stuttgart, as I have been there before and was extremely impressed with the stadium. I I I have visited HSV and St Pauli stadiums in Hamburg, cycled around the stadium in Düsseldorf, had a look around the Olympiastadion in Berlin and also been to another friendly game at Hannover, again another stadium i was impressed with. I stood on the terraces with bier at both shalke and Hannover grounds - enjoyed it.
Top of my WANT list tho, is the yellow wall of noise at Dortmund.
Düsseldorf is an excellent place to stay, the Alstad is great for food and drink, it also has great train links to the rest of Nord Rhein whestfalia and Neider sachsen states, flights from Leeds/ bradford are reasonably priced also.
I'll let you know what we thought of the experience at Fortuna Köln

It looks like the Schalke game was moved because they are in the UEFA cup on Thursday. I'm going to the second leg the following week, then on to 1860 Munich and Augsburg. I'm sure you know all this, but you can get a ticket for up to 5 people which covers you for all travel (regional transport only) in NRW for a day for just over 40 euros. This will get you to Köln and the tram you'll need to Fortuna.

http://www.vrr.de/de/tickets/nrw/schoenertagfuenf/index.html

I suggest you get there in good time. They only get small crowds but there was a bit of a scrum for tickets when I went. It looks like there's a Regionalliga game between 1.FC reserves and Viktoria Köln on the same day. They play most of their games in the small ground next to the main stadium but occasionally play in the main stadium. Given it's a 'derby' that might be the case next week but I can't find anything on that.
