GOOD KILL - 6.0/10

Saw Ehtan Hawke talking about this on Jonathon Ross the other night (must have been the must downbeat/serious guest Ive ever seen on there). Its about a bloke who works as a drone pilot for USA, shoots taliban etc from the sky 9-5 then goes home to his family

The bits where they are doing the missions are quite good, but the stuff at home just didnt work for me - nowhere near as impacting as American Sniper or The Hurt Locker doing the same thing

Too many of these American 'conscience' movies - maybe they should take more time considering the potential damage their interference brings to the world. Some actions have been borne of necessity but they are guilty of meddling far too much in middle eastern affairs when it suits.

Child 44 - 8/10
I enjoyed it, however I have read the book so could follow the story, which IMO did keep fairly well to the original script.
Another good performance from Tom Hardy,- this time with a dodgy Russian accent.
Just read that he is actually going to play the part of BOTH Kray twins in the film 'Legend'

JUPITER ASCENDING - 3.0/10

Bloody rubbish. Dont know what they have done with the special effects but they look and sound like they are from the 80s but not intentionally. The character design of the aliens etc is bloody terrible, Channing Tatum wears guyliner and has some sticky out ears, Eddie Redmayne has an absolutely horrendous voice in it, it is just 5h1te.

MARVELLOUS (BBC 2014) - 7.0/10

Watched this having seen it clean up at the BAFTAs - dunno if strictly a film, it's on for 90mins though. Good main character and quite an uplifting/positive feel to it

FRIDAY NIGHT LIGHTS (2004) - 6.0/10

Glad I didn't see this before I watched the TV series (which is in my Top 10 of TV series), its ok but doesn't have the drama or the characters that the series does, guess that's because it's 2 hours long and not 6 seasons or whatever it was. Not convinced on Billy Bob Thornton as head coach to be honest. Good to see the main kid from American Gothic TV series in something again (loved that in the early 90s need to see it again but can't find it anywhere)

Ex Machina

Suffice to say that I have been waiting for this one for quite some time and having seen it I am totally smitten, not just with Ava but the film as a whole. Beautifully shot, engaging on a number of levels and harboring a sense of palpable unease that keeps you just unbalanced enough to want more. This debut directorial effort by Alex Garland is a stunning effort for those who prefer to think about outcomes and question what it is that 'maketh the man, or indeed the woman'.

9/10 Hip, slick and totally absorbing, whilst the parts may have been seen before, this makes a whole that resonates and demonstrates that a minimalist approach with a great narrative and performances will trump a big effects movie every time.

EX MACHINA - 8.0/10

Very good and interesting. Reminded me of HER from last year a bit, and the AI's voice is a bit like Scarlett Johansson's in that.

Quite claustrophobic due to being set in a research centre in the middle of nowhere with only 4 actors on screen for the majority of it, never know what is about to happen or where it is going.

RUN ALL NIGHT - 4.0/10

Yet another Liam Neeson action/revenge movie. I like Neeson and I like Joel Kinnaman (sp) but I would probably enjoyed myself more if I went for a run, all night.

CHAPPIE - 7.5/10

Wasn't sure I was going to like this but thought it was really good and quite funny at times. The main robot is class, not sure how they have done it and whether they actually use a real one at times, but it does look pretty real if it is CGI and greenscreen etc. Personally like Die Antwoord, their music is most of the soundtrack and gits well with the film - the two of them are good in this considering they are not actors, Hugh Jackman and Sigourney Weaver only have relatively small amounts of screen time but both big names so must have bought into it.

KINGSMAN - 5.0/10

Just not for me, Im assuming its aimed at 15 year old lads or something. Its a cheesier, sh1tter, MLE version of old-style James Bond movies, I know it plays to that but definitely isn't funny and most of the time misses the mark, bruv. About time someone put Samuel L Jackson down IMO, his character's accent is a blatant ripoff of Mike Tyson and is terrible.

IT FOLLOWS - 6.0/10

Been waiting to get hold of this for a while, in hope of a good horror film (the likes of which I personally haven't seen for as long as I can remember). It is good, it reminded me a lot of Halloween/80s horror films with the camera work/synth music and so on. There were no scares for me though. I read a few reviews after watching it and all gave it 4 or 5 stars, including Kermode

Worth a watch, and anyone who is a fan of 80s horror films will like it, if only for a sense of nostalgia

SURVIVOR - 3.5/10

'Thriller' tripe with Pierce Brosnan, Milla Jovovich, a bloke off American Horror Story and one off Broadchurch. Wants to be Bourne, isnt. London looks good, thats about it. Do not go see this at the cinema (I didnt, theres a rip)

GET HARD- 2.5/10

I like Will Ferrell, I like Kevin Hart, I did not like this. A comedy, at which I didn't laugh once in 90minutes. Kevin Hart currently has my two worst films of the year under his belt.

JURASSIC WORLD - 8.0/10

Saw this at the cinema, which is definitely where it should be watched. Thoroughly enjoyed it, but then the first is one of my favourite films.

A few little annoyances, mainly the main little kid being annoying AF, and I didn't like the faux autism story they tried to put on him in the first 20mins, only for it never to be mentioned again. Finding night-vision goggles that have been laid untouched for twenty years and they turn on?! Come on :D

Loads of little digs about commercialisation/consumerism in this, which I doubt I picked up on by accident

As I said, completely enjoyable cinema summer block buster for me, just what I want from a trip to the cinema (costing £26 for me and the wife :embarrass: )

CINDERELLA - 7.0/10

Pure Disney, lovely. Thought it would have been a lot worse. Only concern would be that kids know cartoons aren't real - they could see these live action ones and think that life is/could even possibly be like this, which of course it can't. Initially I commented 'f..k me they could have found a better looking princess', but as it went on I found her more appealing. Nice to see Ben Chaplin, who I absolutely loved in Game On, in a big film. Rob Brydon makes and appearance too.

HOME - 7.0/10

Dreamworks animation about a group of aliens coming to earth, nice story, quite a few funny bits and my boys love it (think I've seen it four times through already)

MAD MAX FURY ROAD - 5.0/10

Didn't fancy this before watching it, and enjoyed it about as much as I thought I would. Very repetitive, very orange and I just found it boring. Waste of a few months for Tom Hardy's acting skills IMO.

POLTERGEIST 1.5/10

Literally one of the worst things I have ever seen, appalling.

Force Majeure 8.5/10

Knew nothing of the film before watching it. Watched it purely on a recommendation. Took me about 20 minutes to realise it was black comedy as its incredibly beautifully shot. Outstanding in terms of cinematography which gives it a very serious feel and without understanding the comedy nuances of the Swedish language, its only comedic elements were like something out of The Office. Uncomfortable scenes of normal people having gone through a far from normal experience.

Once I "got it" I really enjoyed it. Laughed out loud in many places mainly due to the acting of the two main characters. I'd highly recommend it if you fancy something a little bit different and enjoy revelling in the misery of others, which is pretty much what this film makes you do

TED 2 - 4.0/10

Really didn't want to hear they were making a sequel for Ted as I knew it would be sh1t, and as with Anchorman 2 etc, it was sh1t. Nothing new at all, story was rubbish and they must have been short on ideas for this to be the best option, think I smirked twice in 100minutes

MISSION IMPOSSIBLE: ROGUE NATION - 8.0/10

Saw this at cinema the other night, really enjoyed it. Some dullish bits moving the story along, but some excellent chase and fight sequences etc. Some absolutely ridiculous stuff, like TC coming off a motorbike at about 150mph, no helmet or leathers, just gets up not a scratch on him in the next scene  but its one to switch off and enjoy. The main bad guy is absolutely class

MINIONS - 6.5/10

Got to be honest I'm not really into the Minions and I think there are far better kids films than either of the Despicable Me films, but took my boy to see this (at Regent in Redcar which was surprisingly adequate) and we all enjoyed it - Big Hero 6 and Home are better this year

FURIOUS 7 - 4.0/10

Have only seen one of the previous six and never wanted to watch them, thought I would give this a go given how successful it was. Still not for me. Full of absolutely appalling cheesy dialogue, yes I know its supposed to be like that I just cannot enjoy that sh1te. Probably loved by 16 year old lads

San Andreas - 7.5/10

You can't beat a disaster film and this doesn't disappoint. Action from beginning to end. Even Duane "The Rock Johnson's acting wasn't too bad.

SOUTHPAW - 6.0/10

Really disappointed in this, had been looking forward to it for ages having seen the initial trailer and read about the graft Jake Gyllenhall put in to get a realistic build.

The fights are simply unrealistic, I don't know why all/most boxing films do this, when was the last time you saw two fighters just windmilling eachother throwing as many punches as possible and also running at the opponent?! Just doesn't happen, especially in today's defensive/dont-get-hit boxing.

Didn't buy Forest Whittaker's character one bit. Full of cliches, the two main fighters even have the same exact tattoo placing on their backs ffs. The story you can guess from the trailer. Rachel McAdams gets killed off too soon (thats not a spoiler, its in the trailer)

SAN ANDREAS - 6.5/10

Modern day old school disaster movie, good fun I thought and thought it went pretty quickly so I can't have been bored. Love The Rock, his daughter in this is incredible aswell. Class special effects, particularly the tsunami scene in San Fransisco Bay.

No idea why they had two English kids as main characters, you know the English type with the accents that only exist in American movies, absolutely horrendous.

Left Behind

I skimmed through this as it looked abysmal even on the trailers. Be advised, this is the biggest heap of shite you could witness this year. Cage is now toilet and will make anything for a few bucks...what is worse is that he seems to have found his level.

1/10 - Thank fuck for Netflix FF

STRAIGHT OUTTA COMPTON - 6.5/10

Fan of NWA so was interested to see this, brought up some stuff that I didn't know. Enjoyed it, most of the actors do a good job of taking off the real people

Can't put my finger on it but something felt a little bit amateur about it at times, it almost felt like a TV movie

If you're a fan of their music/rap etc I think you will enjoy it

TERMINATOR GENISYS - 3.0/10

Just dreadful, couldn't wait for it to end

TOMORROWLAND - 5.5/10

Quite like it to start off but lost interest about halfway through, some nice ideas and visuals but story is a bit of a mess

PIXELS - 4.5/10

Didn't laugh once, was good to see some old games characters and Michelle Monaghan is always worth a point, not entirely sure who it is aimed at as if it is kids, they wont have a clue who the characters/games are and if its adults there just not enough there

...working my way through some absolute duds here.

Turbo Kid - 8/10 (or 2/10 depending on your taste/sense of humour!)
A "filmed as 80's" homage to post apocalyptic, violent action movies of that era, this is a wonderful, cheesy slightly camp but bloody B movie. Filmed on a shoestring budget in around 3 or 4 locations, the story follows "the kid", an orphaned teenager who survives by scavenging an acid rain plagued, post apocalyptic, 1997 futurescape on his BMX, trading his finds for clean water. The clean water supply that is controlled by the evil, one-eyed Zeus (genre favourite Michael Ironside) and his chief henchman, a skeleton masked, ninja-like warrior with an arm mounted circular saw blade! The kid teams up with the mysterious Apple, a girl he happens across on his travels and Frederic - the wasteland arm wrestling champ and all round bad-ass, to defeat Zeus and his minions, release the clean water and save the future!
It's as cheesy as it sounds but his some brutal OTT gory fight scenes which were massively unexpected and all played tongue in cheek. It's not going to be for everyone, but if you're willing to give it a go and take it for what it is, you might just thoroughly enjoy this low budget B movie romp! I've linked the red band trailer below but beware, it's NSFW - bloody violence & gore:

Legend - 7/10

Enjoyed this about as much as I thought I would, always been interested in the Kray story and London ganglife so the premise alone was enough to keep me interested. Tom Hardy was fantastic, but much preferred him as Reggie Kray, which he absolutely nailed. Ron was a bit over the top for me and become a bit annoying in some scenes.

KNOCK KNOCK - 6.0/10

Eli Roth's latest one, stars Keanu Reeves who is home alone when two attractive young women knock on his door for help in the middle of night. Fun ensues, followed by big consequences. Thought it was ok, will defo put you off if you were considering playing away!
