Doom

PostFri Jun 19, 2015 10:28 pm

I've got a soft spot for Doom. It was probably the 1st game I played multiplayer and remember playing through the single player and failing a lot :D
Coverage shown at E3 gives me hope that this should be a decent game and one I am interested playing.

I used to love Doom back in the day, I remember playing it on an Amiga lol

Not sure how it would hold up today but with next gen graphics etc it could be great. Interesting to see if they go down a slightly RPG-ish route or make it a straight shooter

The map editor in particular looks great, I've a soft spot for things like that - imagine creating some B17 maps & modes for a Friday night sesh.

Played a few of the recent Doom's and they've always let me down.

That looks fucking ace, and that map editor..... if it truly works as simple as that, could be amazing.

Maps to be locked behind DLC, splitting users.

Wish developers would stop doing this.

I'm on it on the PC and like what I've seen so far. Keeps what made Doom feel great to play and adds to it.

Waiting for my new machine to be delivered though as it pushes my current machine a bit too much.

I'm really unsure how this will review but i'm loving it at present. Not only me by the sounds of it, it's getting some great feedback on Gaf and other sites. Proper old school doom updated to the year 2016 :D
I also played a few rounds of the MP and enjoyed it more than in the Beta.

I think in this and U4 I've got a perfect balance to 2 completely different games which I can go between, enjoy and have a great deal of fun.

I watched the VGTV livestream and wasn't that impressed, it looked a bit lightweight. The finishing moves were class but the guns looked a bit... I don't know what the word is. Pippy? The pistol looked particularly naff.

Some reviews starting to come through. As expected, praise for SP and not so much for the MP. I'm going to try and play a lot more of the MP as what I played i enjoyed. Hopefully the game will be supported well for a good while by id

Understandable. I got to say though that it's the best fps i've played in a long time.

Playing through it slowly. It might sound daft but this is so Doom. Definitely like the original. Just started chapter 4 and it's already ramping up nicely. Everyone who enjoys single player fps should definitely pick this up at some point, either now or when it's at a sale price. I'm happy to say that it' already been worth the full admission fee for me :D

Picked it up again after not playing it for months. It really is a glorious SP game. It certainly feels like it did in the original Doom. Some of the battles are so hectic but feels great once you have cleared out an area, usually after a few tries :)

Had a quick blast on the opening levels this morning and its pretty great. If it hadn't just kicked me out because content was "pending install" I'd have kept going.

It's so good though, the risk v reward gameplay and the pace is spot on.

It is. But I haven't used it since I picked up the shotgun, and I unlocked exploding rounds for that about 10 minutes in. Yum.

Ace single player though, I got the double jump boots a level or two ago and as a result the levels have opened right up, almost like a platformer. The level design is fantastic too, its so much fun to traverse and find secrets.

I think i'm down to the last couple of missions now and still loving it. MP is ok but not as good as TF2 but you can play with bots now if you don't want to play with humans :)

What is going to give Doom more legs is the Snapmap mode. Some of the levels designed are brilliant. More story mode type SP games along with some co op games and other good modes. Well worth checking out if you still have the main game.

It's so good, isn't it? I'm going through it on the next difficulty and it's still awesome. I'm putting more effort into finding secrets too and swapping weapon mods this time, experimenting a bit, and it's definitely worth it so far.

Did you do many of the rune challenges? Some of the upgraded rewards are ridiculous, I had the armour drop on glory kill, ranged glory kill and infinite ammo with 75+ armour active for the last couple of levels and it was so fun, throwing myself into fights with infinite rocket launcher and gauss rifle ammo and just tearing through everything.

picked this up the other day - its fucking excellent

i'm only up to like the 3rd or 4th mission and its like a breath of fresh air

i have a REAL issue against them dudes with the shields though! just like Halos' Jackals >:( wankers

like the original game there's loads of stuff hidden throughout the levels which means i'll be playing through this for some time yet!

One question - are some of the hidden areas only accessible once you have applied some agility upgrades???

So you'd have to backtrack once you got the boots? I'm not sure, I generally found all of them once I'd got the map upgrade for the Praetor suit - it was just levers for secrets levels I struggled to find.

Also for the shield blokes, get the stun bomb upgrade for the plasma rifle. If you pop it just behind the shield it'll stun them and drop the shield for a few seconds, more than enough time. Grenades or holograms (not sure when you get those) work very well too.
